I have taken a temporary hiatus from shooting glass plates as I kept getting sinus infections, even though I was wearing masks. I am missing it at the moment and dug up this old plate.
The emulsion is bubbling, in a warped striated pattern, and peeling.
It was shot in summer, I am wondering if humidity and heat effected the way the emulsion set. That or dirty chemistry.
I was so busy trying to bribe my daughter with chocolate to sit still, that I wasn’t paying as much attention as I should have been to what I was doing during the process. You can see from her expression that she was unhappy to be my guinea pig.
I am not surprised that children look particularly grumpy and fed up in old glass plate photographs from the 1870’s. You can see a particularly dissatisfied specimen here.
